Grounded Coplanar Waveguide Calculator (GCPW)
Estimate a coplanar waveguide with a backing ground plane. Check both the same-surface conductor gaps and the distance to the lower ground plane before entering the geometry.
Use the units printed beside each field. On a small screen, scroll the calculator horizontally to see all inputs and results.
Inputs and units
- er
- Relative permittivity of the substrate.
- s (mm)
- Centre conductor width in this calculator’s drawing.
- w (mm)
- Gap to the adjacent ground conductor.
- h (mm)
- Dielectric height to the backing ground plane.
- f (MHz)
- Operating frequency.
- Zo (Ω)
- Target impedance used to synthesize the gap.
How to use this calculator
Analyze estimates Zo from the given geometry. Synthesis estimates the gap w for your chosen Zo while the centre conductor width s and substrate height h remain fixed.
Reading the results
Read impedance in ohms and synthesized dimensions in millimetres. Effective permittivity and velocity factor describe the propagation estimate; the quarter-wavelength output is in millimetres.
Before using the result in a design
Grounded CPW and unbacked CPW are not interchangeable. This form has no copper-thickness input; do not assume it captures every fabrication detail. Ground-via placement, launches and solder mask need separate verification.
Blank fields use the tool’s built-in example defaults; always enter and check your actual design values.
